Portugal Implements Radioplayer to Secure Radio’s Position in the Car and Across Digital Platforms

Portugeese broadcasters joins Radioplayer through their own joint operation, ensuring that Portuguese radio is correctly integrated into modern vehicle systems while strengthening its presence across mobile, smart TV and connected devices.

The main radio players in Portugal - Bauer Media Audio Portugal, Grupo Renascença Multimédia, and RTP - are joining Radioplayer, the unique radio platform owned by the radio industry that is transforming the future of radio with innovation, technology and collaboration. The initiative ensures that radio continues to have a presence in the digital age, while maintaining control over distribution, data and revenue in the radio industry.

The arrival of Radioplayer in Portugal is based on the same principle that has defined radio over time: players collaborate on technology while each one distinguishes itself through the content it offers. This approach ensures that radio remains relevant and accessible to listeners, while driving innovation in the sector.

Radioplayer technology is already present in 17 of the leading car brands, making it the number one hybrid radio platform on European roads. What's more, its reach isn't limited to the car dashboard: Radioplayer offers the simplest way to listen to radio, programs, and podcasts—anywhere, on any device, free of charge, ensuring the best user experience.

Radioplayer stands out for its cross-platform and universal nature, ensuring a consistent presence across different platforms and devices. This approach allows radio to accompany listeners at all times of the day, offering a simple, continuous experience adapted to each context. In cars, in particular, the platform ensures intuitive and safe use, enhancing the quality of the listening experience across different digital platforms.

Starting today, Radioplayer will be available for cars, mobile phones, and Smart TVs, offering a complete experience with high-quality sound, an engaging interface, content synchronization between devices, content downloads for offline listening and personalized recommendations.

Sonia Domarco, Country Manager for Portugal and Spain

“With the biggest radio players in Portugal on board, we can ensure that Portuguese radio has the visibility and capacity for innovation it needs, not only in cars, but wherever listeners want to follow their favourite content.”

Hugo Figueiredo, Member of the Board of Directors, RTP

“For RTP, public service means universal access. Our audiences should be able to find reliable information, culture, and entertainment on all the platforms they use. Radioplayer provides the common technological basis that guarantees this access—whether through a car, an app, or a smart speaker. At the same time, it strengthens the resilience of radio distribution, an essential factor in times of crisis. By integrating Radioplayer, we are protecting tradition and investing in innovation. In this way, we ensure that Portuguese citizens will continue to have free, simple, and reliable access to radio, in the formats they value most today and in the future.”

José Luis Ramos Pinheiro, Manager, Renascença Multimédia Group

“Integrating Radioplayer means responding to our listeners’ expectations. They are looking for one thing above all else: simplicity. They expect the radio to start immediately in the car, to be easy to find on their cell phone, and to accompany them seamlessly across all digital ecosystems. Radioplayer allows us to do all this without compromising our editorial independence or market diversity. It also gives us tools for better content discovery, more robust analytics, and a modern platform to serve advertisers. This is how we ensure that Portuguese radio remains accessible and competitive in the digital age.”

Salvador Ribeiro, CEO, Bauer Audio Portugal

Radioplayer allows us to reinforce what has always distinguished radio: joining forces when it makes sense and asserting our difference where it really matters. By sharing a robust technology platform, we reduce fragmentation and complexity, freeing us to focus on creating relevant content and strengthening our brands. For Bauer Media Audio Portugal, this partnership represents a way to prepare for the future of distribution, ensure a presence in car dashboards, and, at the same time, strengthen our reach on mobile phones and in the home. It is a pragmatic but also strategic step that ensures that radio remains simple, free, and relevant in people's everyday lives."
